John F. Meyer P.A.C., 63, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 at home.
John was born January 8, 1948 in Lime Springs, Iowa, the son of Edward and Edith (Voyna) Meyer. He married Judy Jungk on July 29, 1972 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Dubuque. They recently celebrated their 39-year anniversary.
John graduated from Loras College with B.A., majoring in Latin.
Later, he entered the University of Iowa’s pioneer class of Physician Assistants and graduated with a B.S. He was employed as a P.A. in several clinics in Iowa and Wisconsin. Throughout his career, he promoted the profession at every opportunity and fought for the rights of P.A.s to prescribe medicine. He made house calls back in 1974, and cared for patients from all walks of life. He was a member of the American Physician Assistant Association, expressing that “P.A.s are the eyes and ears of the physicians.” Children knew him best as the “Doctor” who blew up gloves making a “balloon face with a big nose and a mohawk” and made them hear birdies in their ears.
He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church.
In his free time, John enjoyed hunting, bird watching and fishing, especially at Doc’s pond. He also loved to travel. In his final days, John most enjoyed taking drives along the river route and visiting Eagle Point Park.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Judy of Dubuque; two children, Melissa Meyer of Dubuque and John Paul Meyer of Las Vegas, Nev.; his mother, Edith Meyer of Cresco, Iowa formerly of Lime Springs; three siblings, Joe Meyer of Waterloo, Iowa, Barb (Bill) Ball of Fredricksburg, Iowa and Marilyn Meyer of Rochester, Minn.; and his beloved grand-dog, Charlie “Red.”
He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Meyer.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cindy from Hospice of Dubuque, the Oncology Department at Internal Medicine and the Radiation treatment staff at Finley Wendt Regional Cancer Center.
In lieu of a visitation and funeral, please share your condolences and your favorite memories of John via his email: jmeyerpac48@yahoo.com . A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Hoffmann-Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is entrusted with arrangements.
