Helen Beck, 95, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at the Regional Health Services in Cresco, Iowa. She put up a brave fight against cancer.
Helen Dorothy Hennessey was born on December 31, 1914 in Osage, Iowa to William Martin Hennessey and Gertrude Neva (Green) Hennessey. She graduated from Osage High School in 1933. On January 25, 1934 she married Kenneth Russell Beck. To this union five children were born, Evelyn, Edwin, Shirley, Duane and Thomas.
They were engaged in farming in the Osage area, then to the Reinbeck area, before moving to Waterloo in the early 1940s. Kenneth was employed at Rath Packing Plant, and then at John Deere until 1946, while Helen cared for the family and home. In 1946, they moved to Howard County, where they farmed until their retirement years. They enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing and playing cards.
Helen is survived by four children Evelyn (Leland, dec.) Truka of Lime Springs, Shirley (Don) Frana of Waterloo, Iowa, Daune (LaVonne) of Lime Springs and Thomas (special friend Sharon) of Lime Springs; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edwin in infancy; her parents; her husband, Kenneth; and a son-in-law, Leland Truka.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Oratory in Chester, Iowa on April 12. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
