Jean Mundfrom, 88, of Lime Springs, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Evans Memorial Home and Assisted Living in Cresco, Iowa, where she made her home the past three and one-half years.
Jean Johannah Terbeest Borgan Mundfrom was born on December 24, 1921, in York Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to Harry and Frances Terbeest.
Jean grew up on the Terbeest family farm north of Lime Springs, in Fillmore County, attended Greenleafton Dutch Reformed Church, and country school through the eighth grade. It was at country school that Jean first met Olaf Borgan and they married on October 25, 1940. To this union four children were born, Duane of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; Betty (Hal) Lightle of Arlington, Va.; Linda (Ray) Murphy of Lime Springs; and Marcia (Gary) Murray of Cresco.
Jean married Edward Mundfrom on August 9, 1986. In this union Jean gained three children, Carolyn (Richard) Olsen of Chatfield, Minn.; Edward G. (Barbara) Mundfrom of York Township, Fillmore County, Minn.; and Joseph (Leesa) Mundfrom of N.C.
During her lifetime Jean was employed in several capacities with numerous employers including wallpapering and painting, as grocery clerk for Milton Graf at the Leader store, as meat wrapper and ice cream maker for Leonard Novak at the Lime Springs Locker, as well as cook for 23.5 years at the Lime Springs School and also for several years at the Cresco Country Club. In addition, she provided baked goods and a variety of cooked dishes to private clients, as well as catering services for special events.
Jean loved all kinds of music, especially hymns, and was church pianist and organist at Saetersdal Lutheran Church for 50 years. She was a prolific knitter and quilter—bestowing her creations on many family members and charities. Traveling was also a great joy and Jean enjoyed many sightseeing trips across the U.S. and Canada.
She is survived by six children, 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, a sister Helen Cheney of Cresco, numerous nieces and nephews and, using her words, “cousins by the dozens!” Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Olaf Borgan; second husband, Edward L. Mundfrom; her parents; son, Edward G. Mundfrom; grandson, Alan Mundfrom; two brothers, Gerard and Billy Terbeest; and a sister, Roelvine Hovey.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Lime Springs. Burial was at the church cemetery.
