Mildred V. Kleppe Hovey, 83, of Harmony, Minn. went to join her heavenly Father and late son, Daryl Hovey, on April 15, 2010. She went peacefully and was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.
She was born to Peter and Alma Kleppe on August 17, 1926 in rural Chester, Iowa. Mildred attended the Red School in Cherry Grove and graduated from Wykoff High School. On November 20, 1946 she married Harvey H. Hovey.
Mildred lived on a farm in rural Lime Springs, Iowa for 60 years then moved to the Harmony Manor in Harmony. Through the years, Mildred worked at Heco, Sara Lee Factory, three restaurants as a cook and lastly as a Home Health Aid. Mildred was a longtime member of Saetersdal Church of rural Harmony. She also belonged to Birthday Club, Cresco bowling team and Saetersdal Ladies Aid.
Mildred enjoyed many interests. In her younger years, she loved to go on trips, including Hawaii, Norway with daughter Melody and the Rose Bowl parade in California with daughter Beth and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hovey. Other interests were gardening, canning, snowmobiling, playing ball, bowling, playing 500 and writing poetry. Mildred did a lot of baking of buns, lefse and pies—sharing her goodies with friends, family and neighbors. Her pie won First Place at the Preston Fair one year. She will be remembered for always having a smile and her great sense of humor.
She had a sparkle in her eye and soft spot in her heart for her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Mildred is survived by husband, Harvey; two daughters, Beth (John Taylor) of Rochester, Minn. and Melody (Glen Leimer) of Truman, Minn.; and son, Dennis Hovey (Liz Larson) of Aurora, Ill. She has five grandchildren: Brent Taylor, Christina (Taylor) Skinner, Nick Leimer, Missy (Leimer) Felion and Laura Taylor. Mildred also has three great-grandchildren and is awaiting two more from Ethiopia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin Kleppe; an infant son; and son, Daryl.
A funeral service was held Monday, April 19, 2010 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony. Burial was in Saetersdal Cemetery.
