Kenneth Herbert Peter completed his life on Feb. 24, 2013.
A lifelong resident of Iowa, Kenny was born on Oct. 19, 1924 near Ridgeway, Iowa, to Herb and Hazel (Burnikel) Peter. Along with his siblings, Herbert E. “Bill” (now deceased) and his sisters Marilyn and Eileen, Kenny worked family farms in Howard and Winneshiek counties. Upon returning from WWII, where he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, Kenny settled in Lime Springs. He married Blanche Ostby on Oct. 10, 1946, and they raised their family in Lime Springs. A true citizen, Kenny was active in most aspects of Lime Springs, serving as mayor during the town’s Centennial in 1968. Organization memberships included St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #545, Masonic Lodge and numerous commercial and civic committees.
Kenny’s most notable business venture was Peter Produce which involved him in statewide and national egg industry activities. He was well known as an avid fisherman and the instigator of annual fishing trips “up north” at Leech Lake for over 50 years. Kenny and Blanche were especially talented at gathering groups of people for fun and community. They continued to gather people together as snowbirds in Arizona for many years.
Descendants of Kenneth and Blanche Peter are son, Herbert Henry Peter of Lime Springs and his daughter Megan Peter of New York City; and daughter, Patricia (Jesse E.) Stevens of New Hampshire and Lime Springs and their children Jonathan Oren Stevens of Portland, Maine and Bethany (Sam) Shroyer of Earlville, Iowa. Kenny proudly answered to “Old Grandpa,” as he was fondly called by these great-grandchildren: Neva Stevens, Aden Atwell, Kriya Atwell, Willow Lynn Shroyer and Maxwell Shroyer.
Services for Kenneth H. Peter will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lime Springs, Iowa. At a later date, Kenny’s ashes will be interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Lime Springs in an exquisitely handcrafted box made by his grandson, Jonathan Oren Stevens.
If you wish to honor Kenny and his family, please do so by making a donation of time, talent or treasure to any Lime Springs endeavor.
