Arnold (Arnie) Lee DeRuiter, 74, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, March 23, 2012.
Arnie was born on Dec. 17, 1937 in Lynnville, Iowa to Teunis and Jeanette DeRuiter. He attended country school in the Lynnville area and graduated from Lynnville High School in 1956. He attended Upper Iowa University after graduation.
On May 31, 1959 Arnie married Betty Rodas at the Congregational Church in Edgewood, Iowa. They lived in Edgewood and Arnie worked at Thermogas until 1968 when he was transferred to Lime Springs. Arnie also worked for Farm Service and the John Deere Dealership at Davis Corners until he and Betty purchased the hardware store in Lime Springs in 1983. He retired from the hardware business when the store burned in August 2000. Arnie was always active in the Lime Springs community, a long-time member of the Lime Springs Community Club and various other civic organizations over the years. In his spare time, Arnie enjoyed playing golf, shooting pool, fishing and feeding the birds.
Arnie is survived by his three children, Mark (Bonny) DeRuiter, of Byron, Minn., Janet (Tim) Smith of Elk River, Minn. and Craig (Sherri) DeRuiter, of Delaware, Ohio; and grandchildren Zach and Kelsey Smith of Elk River and Jacob and Joshua DeRuiter of Delaware. Arnie is also survived by his sister, Boni (Bud) Wertz of Johnston; sisters-and brothers-in-law Phyllis O’Rourke of Woodbury, Minn., Ted and Elaine Roth of Guttenberg, Charlene Rodas of Arlington and Lowell and Maureen Rodas of Strawberry Point; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; Betty’s parents, Charles and Fannie Rodas; his brother, Daryl DeRuiter; and brothers-in-law Donald Rodas and Art O’Rourke.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2012, at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
