Merle Joseph Mitchell died Monday, March 26, 2012 in Cresco, Iowa. Merle was born to Thomas Mitchell and Loretta Drew Mitchell on July 8, 1926 in Lawler, Iowa.
A viewing will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday March 30, 2012 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in his honor at 9:30 a.m., on March 31, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church and burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa.

Merle Joseph Mitchell died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, March 26, 2012 in Cresco, Iowa. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for the last several years and was lovingly cared for at the Patty Elwood Center. The second oldest of four children, Merle was born to Thomas Mitchell and Loretta Drew Mitchell on July 8, 1926 in Lawler, Iowa. Merle grew up with his four siblings on a farm near Davis Corners. Merle was later married to Adella Kuennen and lived on a farm near Davis Corners for more than 25 years where they had 7 children: Joann Mitchell Driscoll of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kathy Mitchell Patito of Sierra Madre, California; Janet Mitchell Gunhus of Cresco, Iowa; Robert James Mitchell (died at age 10) Richard Merle Mitchell of Rochester Minnesota; Debbie Mitchell Forster (husband Randy) of Boise, Idaho, and Gerald Thomas Mitchell of Cresco, IA. Along with farming, Merle was involved in driving a truck. Merle then began working for Martin Marietta and worked for them for over 25 years. Merle retired from the company at age 78. Some of his many enjoyments in life was the love of Polka dancing and meeting his brother Michael Mitchell for breakfast in McIntyre, Iowa. On Sundays, Merle loved to take long drives and would put all his kids in the car and drive. He also loved his sweets, so much so that he had candy bars in every drawer. Merle has nine grandchildren: Shelly and Jerry Driscoll of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Joseph Patito of New York City, New York and Katherine Patito of Ashville, North Carolina; Dustin Gunhus of Cresco, Iowa; Kristina and Nicholas Mitchell of San Jose, California; and, Katie and Zachary Forster of Boise, Idaho. Merle is survived by his sisters Loretta Mitchell Brown of Charles City, Iowa and Mary Mitchell Dvorak of Elma, Iowa along with several nieces and nephews. Merle is preceded in death by his son Robert James Mitchell, his parents Thomas and Loretta Mitchell, and his brother Michael Mitchell.
