Walter Harwood, 93, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa after suffering a stroke in August 2010. He passed away from complications of more recent strokes.
Walter Wm. Harwood was born Jan. 29, 1919 in Griggs, Okla., the son of Robert and Effie (Coulson) Harwood. His family moved back to Clinton, Mo., after one year. Walter at age 18 yrs. moved to Goldfield, Iowa and worked as a farm hand. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 during WWII and serviced at Fort Miles, Del. for four years, five months and 18 days.
After the war, he returned to Iowa and married Harriet Eleanora Gist on Dec. 24, 1946. To this union were born three children. The couple lived in Goldfield, moving to Corwith, Iowa in 1949 before purchasing a 320-acre farm in Lime Springs in 1958. After retiring from farming in 1979, the couple built a home in Lime Springs where Walter resided until his stroke. They spent 14 winters in their home in Donna, Texas, until 1999.
Walter continued farming his half-acre garden with the produce going to Lime Springs residents. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing for bullheads, deer hunting, visiting with friends and strangers alike, plus letter writing to many far away family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Lea (David) Farnsworth of Cresco; his son Everett (Gail) Harwood of Glen Allen, Va.; his five grandchildren, Cody, Casey, Trevor Harwood, Brenda Lea (Brad) Talbert and Lori Ann (Darrin) Cunningham; four great-grandchildren; 12 nephews and nieces of Missouri; plus many more family members and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanora; son, David; and his sister, Roxie Blackaby.
Upon Walter’s request, all undesignated memorials will go to the Shiloh Cemetery, a private cemetery in Missouri where his parents are buried. There is also a new winter garden going in at the Cresco Care Center, where Walter resided for the past year and a half, in his memory.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Lime Springs United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Friends may call at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, and also one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the spring time at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
