Gladys Schmitt, 90, of Cresco, Iowa passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa.
Gladys Martha, daughter of Charles and Lucy Bouska Deweese, was born on May 26, 1921, on the family farm in Fayette County near Waucoma, Iowa. She graduated from Alpha High School in 1938 and later attended Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa. On May 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edmund Schmitt and moved to his farm north of Cresco, where she lived for nearly 60 years. To this union six children were born.
Gladys was an active member of Notre Dame Parish (formerly Assumption Church) and the Rosary Society and often led the Rosary. She was also a 4-H leader and a census taker. She enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, reading, going on drives in the country, traveling with the bank VIP club and an occasional trip to the casino. From 2005 to 2010, Gladys made her home at the Howard Residential Care Facility, moving to Evans Memorial Home in 2011. Gladys passed away peacefully at age 90 on June 16, 2011.
She is survived by her children, Linda (Dave) Wilgenbusch, Cresco, Jean (Dave) Kaumans, Waterloo, JoAnne White, Cresco, Daniel (Kathy) Schmitt, Cresco, Susan (Donald) Gildner, Preston, Minn. and David (Debbie) Schmitt, Rochester, Minn.; as well as 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund in 1988; her parents; a brother, Neil Deweese; a sister, Elaine Begalske; a son-in-law, Dean White; and granddaughter, Amy Kaumans.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.Source: Lime Springs Herald June 21, 2011
