George J. Drtina, age 97, died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Regional Health Services Hospital of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.
George John Drtina was born, March 30, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Joseph and Frances (Zobeck) Drtina. When he was 11 months old, they moved back to Cresco, where they farmed in Howard Center Township. They later purchased a farm in the Davis Corners area. He attended country school at Howard No. 6. He enjoyed his horses and loved breaking them for field work. When his father took sick, he had to stay home from school and tend to the farm. In his younger years he enjoyed ice skating, fishing, playing baseball and riding horses. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On January 11, 1938 George was united in marriage to Helen Nibaur at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, Iowa. George and Helen purchased a farm in 1938 where they lived until retirement in 1978 and then moved into Cresco.
George is survived by his wife, Helen of 72 years and two sons, Richard (Sonia) Drtina and David (Patti) Drtina all of Cresco. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Danny Drtina, Robin (Dave) Sobolik, Jill (Pat) Ryan, Julie (David Hagen) Drtina and Mark (Lori) Drtina all of Cresco; great-grandchildren, Alanda Drtina, Brendan Drtina, Ciara Drtina, Brian Sobolik, Jayme Sobolik, Cody Sobolik, Mitchell Ryan, Michael Ryan, Dalton Hagen, Traeton Hagen and Luke Drtina; one sister, Violet Ladwig of Cresco; a sister in-law, Angie Drtina, and a brother in-law, Jerome Nibaur, both of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Joseph, Lester and Edward Drtina; and three sisters, Esther Jones, Anita Svoboda and, in infancy, Annie Estelle Drtina.
Mass of Christian Burial was held July 21, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Church with burial in the Calvary Cemetery.
