Johnston, Iowa - Marian Helen Roeder, 86, of Johnston, Iowa, died June 4, 2015 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston from complications of a stroke.

A visitation was held June 7 at Ankeny Memorial Chapel followed by a rosary. Funeral Mass was held June 8 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa with burial at Cresco Calvary Cemetery.

Marian was born May 4, 1929 in Templeton, Iowa to John and Helen (Neu) Taphorn. Though Marian did not serve in the war, she contributed by dropping out of high school to help with the farm while her brother served. She eventually finished her education by attending high school in Fort Dodge. On Jan. 29, 1951 she married Urban Roeder in Odebolt, Iowa. The couple farmed near Ida Grove until 1969, when Urban and Marian moved to rural Lime Springs, Iowa and farmed until their retirement.

Marian moved to the Des Moines area in 2001 to be near family. She had the chance to travel to the East Coast and to various cities to visit her children and grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. Her deep faith in God was evident throughout her entire life. She enjoyed nature, ice cream, word puzzles and Wheel of Fortune.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Connors (Pete) of Star Prairie, Wis., Paul (Kristie) Roeder of Waukon, Iowa, Pete Roeder of Ankeny, Iowa, Frank (Carry) Roeder of Adel, Iowa, David (Terry) Roeder of Waterloo, Iowa Darlene Hentges of New Hope, Minn., Aggie (Rob) Gustafson of Windham, N.H., Margaret (Cody) Spikes of Polk City, Iowa, MaryJane (Robert) Recker of Green River, Wyo., Angela (John) Welch of Clive, Iowa, Joe Roeder of Van Meter, Iowa and Judy (Karl) Krueger of Chester, N.H.; 30 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Taphorn of Alta, Iowa and Jim Taphorn of Omaha, Neb.; five sisters, Clara Sibenaller of Blooming Prairie, Minn., Joan Smith of Omaha, Sister Janet Taphorn of Dubuque, Iowa, Irene Rethman of Holton, Kan. and Lois Galles of Kingsley, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband Urban, in 1996; her daughter Rose Spence in 2013; three brothers; one sister; two grand daughters; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diocese of Des Moines Seminarian Appeal, Catholic Charities of Des Moines, or Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Church.
