SAN PABLO, CA - John V. Kay, 73 died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. He had lived his earlier years in Cresco and had primarily resided in San Pablo, Calif.
John Victor Kay was born on Aug. 2, 1941 in Cresco, the son of Victor and Margaret Lorene (Hudson) Kay. John attended elementary school in Cresco until his family moved to Crockett, Calif. when he was 10 years old.
After graduating from John Swett High School in Crockett in 1960, John worked with his father at the C and H Sugar Mill while he attended Contra Costa College.
While at college, he met Linda Perlow, and they were married on June 26, 1962.
Always a family man, John was special to his wife, two daughters, and their families, and he especially enjoyed being a mentor to his grandchildren. Whether raising German Shepherds, cultivating a garden, reading, or taking his daily walks, John always had a special zest for living and a great sense of humor. As a good listener, he always made the speaker feel important.
John worked as a Teamster and a Grade Checker, working off of Surveyor Plans, for the Operating Engineers in Northern California for 48 years. He retired in January 2004.
John is survived by his wife Linda; their daughter: Sheri Kay and grandson: Brandon (Grecia/engaged) Stevenson; their daughter: Lisa (Mike) Afonso and grandsons: Casey, Justin, and Cody; his brother: Charles (Delia) Kay and nephew: James; and sister-in-law: Marcia Perlow; John's aunt: Jane (Leeman) Hudson, is a current resident at the Cresco Care Center; also, surviving are John's cousins, formerly from the Cresco area: Mary Ann (John/deceased) Rathert Wildman of Elkader, Iowa, Will (Nancy Davis) Rathert of Huston, Texas, and Shirley (Dennis) Berglund of Greenwood Village, Colo., and Margaret Callahan of Cresco.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife's parents: Charles and Helen Perlow; and his mother's brothers and sisters from the Cresco area: Mae (Raymond) Rathert, Albert (Agnes) Hallman, Pauline (Roland) Callahan (Albert) Cenek, and Leeman Hudson; cousins from the area who have preceded John in death are: James (Josephine) Rathert, Sarah (Walter) Rathert Whittle, and William Callahan.
John's grandparents: Myrtle Hallman Hudson and William Ellsworth Hudson were very early residents of Cresco, and his great-grandparents: John and Martha Ann (Light) Hallman, were early pioneers in the area.
