Orin Johnson, age 77, of rural Cresco, IA passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN from complications of a rare blood disorder.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 20, 2014 at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico, Iowa. Burial will take place in Jerico Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA.

Orin Alfred Johnson was born April 15, 1937 on the family home north of Jerico to Alfred T. and Orre (Johnson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Jerico Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member, having served as an officer for many years, participated in the church Men’s Club, and volunteered for fix-it jobs around the church.

On October 14, 1967, Orin married Marjorie K. Gesell at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa. They became the parents of one son, Steven. They first lived in Saude and then moved to a farm west of Saude until they purchased their acerage northwest of Schley in 1977. Orin started farming in 1972, and he later rented his father-in-law’s farm and helped his son with his farming operation. Orin drove a portable mill for Ellingson Farm Supply for 11 years and then drove a feed truck for Farmer’s Mill, Protivin, IA from 1973 until his retirement in 2009.

Since retiring, Orin spent a lot of time volunteering in the gardens at Cresco Care Center as well as wherever else there was a need. Orin enjoyed puttering in his shop, helping Steve with farm work and the cattle, and especially enjoyed teaching his grandson how to be a good farmer. The smiles of his granddaughter brought him much joy, and he always made sure she had fresh berries whenever she visited.

Orin is survived by his wife, Marge; son, Steve (Wendy); grandchildren, Logan and Lindsey; and brother, Lowell Johnson all of Cresco, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Orre Johnson and his in-laws, Marvin and Ruth Gesell.
