James Howard “Jimmy” Polaschek was born on April 8, 1977, son of Neil and Joneil (O’Connor) Polaschek in Cresco, IA. He graduated with the Crestwood High School class of 1995. Jim went on to receive his LPN and Paramedic licenses. He spent ten years saving lives as a Paramedic Specialist for Johnson County Ambulance, and he most recently worked in the Orthopedic Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Most notable about his career in health care was the genuine, loving care he gave each and every patient. It was through work that Jim met the love of his life, Nicole.

Jim was a man who lived one day at a time by relying on his steadfast faith in God and the wisdom of the Serenity Prayer. He had a passion for teaching others how to live this way, cherishing every moment that God gives you. Jim had an incredible sense of humor that was followed by a boisterous laugh. His joy for life was a blessing to the countless people who called him friend. He was a devoted member of AA and very proud of his Irish heritage. Every St. Paddy’s Day, Jim made sure to have a Celtic ringtone on his phone. He was a staunch Republican and always eager to share his political views. Jim enjoyed spending his leisure time deer and pheasant hunting with his beloved chocolate lab, Buck, whom he called his “best friend”. He loved trout and ice fishing with his father and Nicole’s boys. He enjoyed cooking and sharing his wild game. Another favorite activity of his was cruising on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and going on special trips with Nicole. Jim was an extraordinary Green Bay Packers fan and vigorously cheered them on through every game. He was also a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeye football and wrestling teams, and MMA fighter Todd Schmauss.

Jim is survived by his significant other, Nicole Dayton of North Liberty, IA and her boys Joshua and Elijah, his parents Neil and Joneil Polaschek of Decorah, IA, his brother SFC (retired) Dean (Robbin) Polaschek of Raeford, NC and their daughter Rebecca, his sisters Mary Tom Smith of El Reno, OK and her children, Josh, Nick, Mollie and Mollie’s daughter Emma, and Maureen (Jack) Hrdlicka of Decorah, IA and their children Jenna, Jacob, Donnie, and Derek.

Preceding him in death are his maternal grandparents Joe O’Connor and Colletta and Howard Foote, paternal grandparents Joe and Clara Polaschek, his uncles Tom and Joe Polaschek, Wayne Hoag, and Paul Sir, aunts Joyce Harris and Jeannine Hoag.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Pheasants Forever, AA, and the Humane Society.
