MILWAUKEE, WI - Graveside funeral services with full military honors for Vernie L. Barnes of Milwaukee, Wis., formerly of Cresco, Iowa were held on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Jelacic Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Vernie, 93, died peacefully Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 at his home of 64 years in Milwaukee.

Vernie L. Barnes was born in Cresco in 1921, the last son of Leslie M. and Anna (Baethke) Barnes. He attended Assumption grade and high school until his sophomore year, when he entered the CCC's. In 1940 Vernie joined the US Navy, fought in WWII and the Korean War serving aboard many ships and rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

During his 21 year career in the Navy he met his wife to be, Lolita (Cheek) in Milwaukee, and in 1949 they were wed. Vernie and Lolita spent over 60 years together, made a couple of return trips to Cresco and were blessed with four sons.

He is survived by his sons: Vernie M. (Ann), John (Mary), Thomas (Margaret), Jerry (Barbara); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Vernie was preceded in death by his wife: Lolita; brother: Virgil; and sister: Mary.
