Newman Arthur Blackburn, fifth son of John and Marie Blackburn, was born on the family farm six miles south of Cresco on Nov. 30, 1877. During the past one and one-half years he was in failing health and died at his home in Cresco on Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, 1942. His father, mother and one brother, William preceded him in death.

He attended the rural school near his home, was graduated from the Cresco high school and the law school of the University of Iowa. He practiced law in Cresco many years and served several terms as Justice of the Peace.

He became a member of the Methodist church during the ministry of the Rev. Frank Shaffer 45 years ago. For nearly 40 years he was superintendent of the Mission Sunday School that met in the South Side school building.

On Aug. 9, 1905, he was united in marriage with Ada Eighmey of Cedar Falls who taught in the Cresco schools. Mrs. Blackburn and their daughter Ruth survive. Three brothers and one sister also survive: Charles of Detroit, Mich.; John and Frank Blackburn and Mrs. May Miller of Cresco.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, February 18, at the Peckosh funeral home conducted by the Rev. Geo. W. Turner. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Blackburn, Pat Blackburn, Dan Blackburn, W. H. Cook, Hugh Malone and Clarence Montague.
