DIED.
SCHOFIELD.At the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Robert McCullock, in Cresco, Iowa, February 16th 1883, Maria Schofield, relict of Geo. W. Schofield aged 76 years last August.
In 1809, John DeMotte, the father of deceased came with his wife and five children, into Chautauqua Co., New York, making their home on lot 5, in the south part of the town of Ellery. In 1821, she was married to Geo. W. Schofield, of the town of Gerry. Nearly 49 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Schofield removed from Chautauqua county to Stephenson county, Illinois, settling somewhere in the vicinity of Freeport. They also resided for a time in Green county, Wisconsin, near Wyota. In 1854, they removed to New Oregon, becoming the first residents of that town, Mrs. Schofield, the first woman resident of the town of which her husband became the proprietor. Fifteen children were born to them, eleven of whom are still living. Mr. and Mrs. Schofield possessed those rare traits of character which are so marked and emphatic in strong integrity, manly and womanly independence born of virtue, cradled in love and hope, and whose mature years have been emblematic of their early days. During the summer of 1876, Mrs. Schofield visited about Sinclairville, N. Y., participating in a family re-union, at which were gathered some sixty members of the family and embracing those of three generations. Since her return her health has been gradually declining, a partial paralytic stroke having rendered her comparatively helpless for quite a time. No material change was observed in her condition from what it had been for a long time, until the forenoon of the day she was called upon to surrender the toil and sorrow of life for the crown of immortality.
