Iowa Plain Dealer February 22, 1883, P3 C2

WITT—In Cresco, January 6th, 1883, of scarlet fever, Charlie F., son of George and Elizabeth Witt, aged five years, eleven months and two days.

I watched him and saw his life go out
As I held him close to my breast
And I knew that his suffering little form
Was forevermore at rest.
As I gazed on his face through blinding tears,
And kissed his marble hand,
I knew that angels had carried him home,
Away to the “better land.”

That better land where sorrow and sin
And suffering can never come;
I know that my little boy is there
Safe, safe in the Savior’s home;
And though my heart is throbbing now
With an anguish too deep to tell,
I know that God is wise and good,
And he “doeth all things well.”

I have laid the little form away
Forever from mortal sight,
But I know his spirit is pure and free,
And will live in eternal light,
Forever safe in the Savior’s love,
Away from all want and care;
Oh! I would not bring him back to earth
For I know he is better there.

Yes, better far, and I’ll meet him there,
When done with eartrly{sic} strife,
And I close my eyes to earthly cares,
And enter eternal life.
To be forever with those I love,
Forever at God’s right hand,
Safe from all weariness, pain and death,
Safe in that “better land.”
