Charles William DeWalle, 90, passed away May 23, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his wife and children.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA, with a scripture service to follow. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church.
Chuck was born at home on May 26, 1923, to L. J. and Johanna (Shea) DeWalle, the youngest of six children.
He graduated from Cresco High School in 1941. Working in Cedar Rapids, IA, he received an appointment into the Civil Service as a government clerk at the Pentagon. "At that time, he was the youngest man ever receiving such an appointment from Howard County, being only eighteen years old."
He returned to Cresco and married Tillie Sobolik on August 27, 1945. They farmed together all their lives. In 1990 they retired and moved to Cresco.
Chuck enjoyed many baseball games, golf, car races, dancing, square dancing, playing cards and he had a great love of music. He enjoyed life doing whatever he could to help someone, whether it be his children, grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, their spouses and many of his friends.
Chuck is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Tillie, and his three children: Sharon (Jim) Sobolik of Cresco, IA; Dennis (Mary) DeWalle of Redlands, CA and Linda (Steven) Middlebrook of Cresco, IA. His five grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Christopher and Lurleen Sobolik, their children Madeline and Mitchell of Cedar Falls, IA; Jason and Amy Sobolik, their children Peter, Ava and Jonathan of LaCrosse, WI; Emily Anderson of Redlands, CA; Lindsay (Chris Marti fiance') Middlebrook of Salt Lake City, UT and Drew Middlebrook of Moorehead, MN. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters: Margaret (Leonard) Novak; Agnes (Edwin) Gunhus and Dorothy (Jerome) Baker and his two brothers: Lyola (Bessie) DeWalle and Urban (Pat) DeWalle.
