Richard “Dick” Zak, age 95, of Cresco, IA, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday May 1, 2014 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA, with a scripture service to follow. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church.

Dick was born on July 5, 1918 on a farm in Howard County near Maple Leaf to Frank and Antonia (Marovetz) Zak. Dick attended country school and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma. He attended Loras College for one year and worked as an electrician before enlisting in the U.S. Army Signal Corp serving 44 months in the service. Dick served 38 months of this time overseas during WW II until being discharged in 1945.

Dick continued his education and went on to graduate from University of Iowa in 1948.
On September 8, 1948 he married Norma Jean Osenga of Lime Springs. They began their
married life in Cedar Rapids, IA where Dick worked as a sales representative for an electrical supply company.

In 1953 after starting their family, they moved to Cresco where they opened their own business – Zak Electric. Dick continued in this business for almost 50 years. During that time he was also a substitute rural mail carrier and eventually a full time carrier.

Dick was an active member of the Cresco community participating in Notre Dame Home School Assoc., St. Joseph’s Parish Council, Cresco Centennial Committee, Chamber of Commerce, - Howard County Veterans Memorial Construction Committee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 135, Knights of Columbus and a charter member of VFW Post 4561. He served in various positions within these organizations at the local and state levels.

Over the years he enjoyed softball, bowling, playing cards, traveling with his wife, Norma and spending time with his family. Dick is survived by 5 children Barbara Zak (Jim Dietzenbach) of Cresco, Patricia (William) Krause of Hanover, MN; Michael Zak (Michelle Patterson) of Cresco, Jackie (Jeff) Brown of Savage, MN; Annette (Tim) Paulson of Mound, MN. Grandchildren: Laura (Ahmed Mudhafar) Krause, Katelyn (Joe) Ortmann, Joel (Samantha) Zak, Jeff Zak, Michael Brown, Emily, Amber and Molly Paulson and 6 great grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, infant daughter Mary, twin boys and son Robert as well as his parents and 3 brothers.
