Paul, 65, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at his home in Hubbard after a short fierce battle with lung cancer.
Paul Richard Bateman was born June 17, 1948, in Cresco, Iowa, the second oldest son of Walter V. Bateman and Helen M. (Lienhard) Bateman. He received a Catholic education and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco in 1966. After graduation he worked in the meat department at the Cresco Red Owl Grocery Store. Uncle Sam called him into the Army in March 1968, to boot camp at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas, then in June 1968 to Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas and in April 1969 was stationed in South Korea where he cooked in the officer's mess and played baseball. He was honorably discharged in March 1970.
On Nov. 23, 1968, he married Barbara Emery in the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. After being discharged from the service, he resumed his 30 year career in the retail grocery business which took him to Jack & Jill in Cedar Falls in 1975, then to Liddle's Super Valu in New Hampton in 1981 and finally to Hubbard in February 1984 when he purchased the local grocery (Bateman's Food Center) which he owned and operated for almost 17 years with his wife and family. In 2000, a natural gas explosion ended his grocery career.
After retiring from the grocery store, Paul kept busy as manager of the Hubbard Golf & Rec. for two seasons, was a substitute rural mail carrier and worked at Prairieland Lumber. Paul served on the Hardin County Veteran's Board for over 15 years, was an active member in the Hubbard American Legion Post #4 for 24 years, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #4561 in Cresco. He served on the Parish Council at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco and later St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing. He was also a member of the St. Gabriel's choir. He had been Parks Commissioner in New Hampton, and was a former board member on the Hubbard Development Corporation and Hubbard Golf & Rec. Board.
He loved playing sports his entire life. Baseball, bowling, hunting, fishing, and golf were favorite pastimes with friends and family. His love of sports continued through generations as he helped coach and played with his grandchildren, always ready for a competition or just playing catch. His greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren, telling stories, playing cards, sharing his wisdom, or teaching life lessons.
Paul is survived by his wife, Barbara Bateman; three daughters: Lorelei (Kevin) Lake of Hubbard, Janel (Kervin) Waterman of Newport, Wash., and Cheryl Bateman of Eldora; 10 grandchildren: Haley, Alaina, Quinton and Dalton Lake, Emma, Christian, Madeline, Paul, Holly and Jayce Waterman; his mother: Helen Bateman of Cresco; four brothers: John, David, Tom, and Steve Bateman; sister: Kathy Bateman; and our "foreign student daughters, son, and granddaughters".
He was preceded in death by his father: Walter Bateman; sister: Ruth Bisping Bruner; and nephew: Michael Bateman.
A memorial fund will be established to benefit lung cancer research.
