Gerald F. Pechota, 70, of Protivin, IA passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, March 13, 2014.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Nick March officiating. Burial will be held at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 123 North Main St. in Protivin, IA, with a scripture wake service held at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Gerald was born to William “Bill” and Alice (Koudelka) Pechota on November 25, 1943 in Cresco, IA. In 1961, he graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin. While dancing at Matter’s Ballroom, Gerald met the love of his life, Jeannie, and on May 6, 1967, they were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, IA. Gerald was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Gerald lived and farmed on the home place his whole life. He was also a very talented carpenter. Sports were a big part of Gerald’s life, playing a lot of basketball, bowling, softball and horseshoes in his younger years. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and especially loved to watch his grandchildren play at their sporting events. Listening and dancing to Polka music was one of his favorite pastimes. Gerald also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, visiting with people, especially if he could have a conversation in Czech, and being a part of 500 and poker card clubs.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Jeannie; children: Steve (Beth) Pechota of Palmer, AK, Tammy (Steve) Reicks of Solon, IA, Sharla (Bruce) Zwanziger of New Hampton, IA, Diane (Don) Foltz of Center Point, IA, and Jenny (Korey) Leuenberger, Cedar Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Lindsey and Mitchell Reicks, Maddie, Jake, and Dillon Zwanziger, Carlie, Paige, and Drew Foltz, and Blake, Landon, and Mya Leuenberger; sister, Janette Opat of Cresco, IA; father-in-law Hugo Hackman of New Hampton, IA; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, and sisters and brothers-in-law.
His parents, Bill and Alice, brother-in-law, Syl Opat, and mother-in-law, Mildred Hackman preceded him in death.
