Bowers

J.W. Bowers was born in Blair county,Pa., Sept. 28,1848. When he was one year old the family moved to Dubuque and in 1855 they located in Clayton county. In 1866 Mr. Bowers came to Howard county and resided here continuously with the exception of two years while engaged in the produce business with his brother at New Hampton.

Feb. 9,1882 he was married to Carrie L. Hatter. Six children- four sons and two daughters-were born to them, five of whom survive, one daughter dying in infancy.

Mr. Bowers was a quiet, unassuming man, just and honorable in his dealings with his fellow men and always considerate of the welfare of his family.

He passed from this life May 7th,1913. Funeral services were held at the family residence Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. F.C. Shaffer assisted by Rev. John Gammons. Burial was at Oaklawn cemetery.

J. W. Bowers passed away Wednesday afternoon, after an illness of several months. The funeral takes place at 2:30 this afternoon at the family residence.
