RUTH BLACKBURN DIES AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS

The community of Cresco and vicinity was surprised and shocked at the rather sudden death of Ruth Blackburn, which occurred last Saturday morning about 5 o'clock.

Ruth Mary Blackburn, only child of N.A. and Ada Blackburn, born December 6, 1913, at Cresco, passed away at Mercy hospital on Saturday, January 9, 1943, after all possible care had been given to her.

Ruth spent her life in Cresco, receiving her schooling at the Cresco public schools, being graduated from high school in the class of 1933. She was a good student, a credit to her parents and her school with a grade of 92 for her high school years and with a grade of 96 in music.

Attended Music School
In 1937-38 she attended the McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, Minn., taking nearly two years of work there. Without doubt she was a born musician, and at times excelled herself in accomplishments; always willing to assist when asked, she gave of herself without stint to the musical life of this community.

A likeable personality, she enjoyed life with her friends, and they with her. She was for several years an active member of the Wesleyan club. Ruth was organist at the Methodist church from her graduation until going to Minneapolis, and when the new church was dedicated she again took the place of organist there. She will be missed from this church, and from other churches where she served and from the community also.

Death came to her rather unexpectedly after a short illness. She leaves her mother, two aunts, Mrs. Curtis of Des Moines, Mrs. Hopkins of Duluth,Minn.; two uncles, Frank Blackburn of Cresco; John, Dan, and P.F. Blackburn, cousins, Bernis, Mrs. Ernest Moore; John Fullen, Austin, Minn., and Mrs. Jim Soukup of Ridgeway and many friends.

Funeral Tuesday

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 12, with prayer at the Peckosh funeral home and aervice at the Methodist church in the hands of the pastor, the Rev. Geo. W. Turner, assisted by the Rev. James Fleck. Organ music was rendered by Mrs. Olive Nagel. The Young People's choir was represented by Luanne Darby, Mary Thayer, Betty Miller and Dale Kirschman. The Wesleyan club of which Ruth had been an active member for several years was represented by Nel Nora Richards, Irene Capper, Ione Walters and Shirley Marshall.

Pall bearers were Jean Nichols, William Jones, Francis DeWalle, Robert Lyons, Clem Kapler and Gordon Benson. Interment at Oak Lawn cemetery.
