Phineas Michael Banning
Funeral services for P.M. Banning who died at his home at 413 Second Avenue East Thursday morning, Jan. 25, 1940, were held at the Peckosh funeral home Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Arthur D. Phelps, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated. Burial was on Oaklawn cemetery.
Relatives attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Libbey and son Ronald of Waterloo; Mrs. Flossie Betts, Wayside, Nebr.; Mr.and Mrs. Wilbur Lemon, Richwood, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Clair Elliott, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. John Rosa, Decorah; Mr.and Mrs. Ben Logsden, Burr Oak; Tine Harvey, Ossian; Mrs. Alvin Blumenhagen, Castalia and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Farnsworth and son Cecil of Harmony, Minn.
Rev. Phelps read the following life sketch of deceased at the funeral.
Phineas Michael Banning was born at Ossian, Winneshiek county, Iowa, on April 7, 1864. He was married to Cora Ada Vance on Sept. 28, 1885, at Decorah, Iowa. To this union five children were born. There are two daughters, Mrs. Roy Libbey of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mrs. Flossie Betts of Wayside, Nebr. Of three sons, only Roy H. Banning of Cresco is left. Ray L. Banning was killed while in service during the World War at Fort Worth, Texas. Ralph D. Banning died at Pierre, S.D. a year and a half ago. Besides his wife and children there are nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Virgie Betts, a granddaughter, died 18 years ago.
Mr. Banning has lived in Cresco and its vicinity for the past 48 years, having moved from Ossian in 1892.
The Bannings left the farm in 1910 and have lived in Cresco since.Mr. Banning was a member of the district school board for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Banning had the pleasure of celebrating their golden anniversary four years ago last September.
Mr. Banning has been in failing health several months and passed away on Thursday morning at 3:25 January 25. His death is a shock to his many relatives and friends.
