ELMA - Funeral services for Charles W. Johnson of Elma, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerico with Pastor Daniel Larson officiating. Interment will be held in Jerico Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Charles, 88, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Charles Willard Johnson was born July 9, 1925, on the family farm in rural Elma, the son of KC and Anna (Sanderson) Johnson. He attended country school Paris 7 through the eighth grade. After receiving his education, Charles farmed with his dad until Dec. 30, 1943 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corp. During his service Charles participated in action at Iwo Jima, Japan. He received his honorable discharge on July 25, 1946. When he returned home Charles continued to farm and was a carpenter until he retired.

Charles was a lifetime member of Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church and a proud member of the NFO. He enjoyed hunting, archery and artillery, and music. He was an especially wonderful musician and enjoyed playing in local bands.

Charles is survived by his sister: Sonja (Keith) Olmanson of Mankato, Minn.; his brothers: Walter (Kady) Johnson of Akron, Ohio, Marland (Jeananne) Johnson of Laurel, Mont., Donald (Claire) Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz. and Waldon (Peggy) Johnson of Cresco; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Alna, Dagney and Wanda (Ron) Hansen; and his brother: Dean.
