Funeral services for George C. Burgess of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco with Pastor Mike Carey officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, March 15, at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour to services at the church on Tuesday.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

George, 65, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

George Clifford Burgess was born Nov. 30, 1944, the son of Clifford and Edith (Shuttleworth) Burgess in Cresco. He was raised east of Cresco and graduated from Crestwood High School. Following his education, he went to Florida and started working as a store manager for the Neisner Stores.

It was during this time he married Ann Dvorak on an island near Miami Beach, Fla. George and Ann returned to Cresco in 1970 and started farming. George did not enjoy farming. He then started driving bus and doing tours for Hawkeye Stages out of Decorah. George did this for about 20 years and had driven to most of the States and Canada. After he retired from bus driving, he started driving for other companies and spent about 12 years driving for Balk Lime and Ready Mix. He was still working when he died.

George loved to live life to the fullest, he enjoyed music and he and Ann would go to many dances. He also enjoyed horses and ponies, going on trail rides and would come home from driving and would leave right away to be able to ride the trails. George also had a gift of gab and could talk with anyone, telling story after story. He was kind and soft hearted and would help anyone who asked.

He is survived by his wife Ann of Cresco; four daughters: Catherine (Jeff) Meinecke of Cresco, Wendy (Vince) Mathiass of Readlyn, Kristy Burgess (Dusty Klesner) of Moose Lake, Minn. and Shelly (Casey) Bunston of Cresco; six grandchildren: Skye, Reece,and David; Daniel, Montgomery "Monty" and Tyler; two sisters: Diane (Wayne) Hove of Kankakee, Ill. and Rosalie (Niles) Bernick of Virginia; and one brother: Richard (Marlene) Burgess of Cresco.

George was preceded in death by a son: Clifford Burgess; a grandson: Brenden Meinecke; his parents; and one brother: Thomas Burgess.
