February 6 services held for Arnold Baker,86

Funeral services for Arnold Baker, 86, were held on Thursday, February 6 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev. Michael Fitzgeral officiated with interment at Oaklawn Cemetery,Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He died Monday, February 3, 1992, at the Howard County Hospital.

Arnold Baker was born October 5, 1905, on a farm near Cresco the son of William and Augusta (Stute) Baker. He graduated from Assumption High School and attended Loyola College in Chicago. He married Ada Hanson in 1935.

Arnold operated the Black and White Sandwich Shop in Cresco for 21 years after which he co-owned a shoe store. He was a full-time secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for a number of years.During this time he was instrumental in bringing the Donaldson Company to Cresco and starting the Annual Chamber sponsored Ag Fest and Art Show. The Cresco Centennial was observed during his tenure as Secretary and he and Elder Hoines co-chaired the event that honored Dr. Norman Borlaug, the 1970 Nobel Peach Prize winner.

Arnold was a long-time member of the Cresco Country Club, Kiwanis Club, Assumption Church and Knights of Columbus. Upon retirement he and his wife traveled extensively and spent the past 15 winters in Arizona.

Survivors are his wife, Ada; one son, William of Des Moines; one daughter, Linda of Tucson,AZ; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Preceding him death were his parents, one brother, Carl and a sister, Marguerite.
