Mildred Butler, 61, services held Thursday

Funeral services for Mildred A. Butler, 61, were held at 1:30 p.m. May 7 in the Congregational United Church of Christ in Cresco. Officiating were the Rev. Linda Myren, interim pastor of the church, and the Rev. Claude J. Jones, pastor of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery with sons and brothers as casket bearers: namely, Brian Butler, Bruce Butler, Barclay Butler, John Butler, George Elwood and Henry Elwood. Local arrangements were with Lindstrom Funeral Home.

She died May 4, 1987, at her sister's home in Maquoketa after a long illness.

Mildred Alice (Elwood) Butler was born June 2, 1925 at Vernon Springs in Howard county, the daughter of Dale and Marion Elwood. She graduated from Cresco high school and attended Coe college and Iowa State University. She was president of Chi Omega Sorority.

On August 22, 1947, Mildred married Richard L. Butler. M.D. of Marshalltown. They lived in Boston, MA while he was a student and later in Great Britain where Mrs. Butler was chairman of volunteers for the American Red Cross in Europe.

They later lived in Syracuse, NY where Mrs. Butler was a director of the American Red Cross, president of P.E.O. Sisterhood (Chapter AP),president of the Corithian Foundation, president of the Onodaga Medical Society Auxiliary, council member of Everson Museum of Art and held offices in Syracuse Symphony Guild, the Syracuse Garden Club and Harmony Circle.

Subsequent to Dr. Butler's death in 1977, Mrs. Butler lived in Des Moines where she was a member of the Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church. Since 1979 she was employed at Joseph's Jewelry Store.

Survivors are her mother, Marion George Elwood of Cresco; five children: Brian R. of Strongsville, Ohio; Bruce L. of Des Moines, Barclay P. of Fort Rucker, AL., Brita B. Ganito of Twinburg, Ohio and John L. II of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Francis Melvold of Maquoketa and two brothers, Henry Elwood of Cresco and George Elwood of DeWitt.
