Joseph Burnikel was born May 8, 1863, in Wachenheim, Bavaria. He came to this country when he was 18 years old. He worked as a baker in La Salle, Ill., and in Cleveland, Ohio, for a few years and then for fifteen years in Chicago. He was married to Miss Ida Ohmacht, March 10, 1895. This union was blessed with seven children, three girls and four boys. Two daughters, twins, died in early infancy. The others with their mother survive.
Mr. Burnikel became a farmer in Iowa in 1902. He farmed for 26 years and seven years ago moved to Cresco. He was in poor health for about two years and died Thursday, Aug. 1, 1935.
The survivors are his wife, Ida; one daughter, Hazel, now Mrs. Peters and four sons: George and William, both of Siren, Wis.; Leonard and John both of Cresco. There are eight grandchildren and one brother, George Burnikel, of Chicago, Ill.
A private service for the bereaved was held at the home of Rev. L. W. Moench Monday morning, August 5. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were deceased brother George Burnikel and Jake Zink, both of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Will Ohmacht, Benson, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. John Ohmacht, St. Cloud, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Art Huebner and Myrna, Montivideo, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Schultz, Preston, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Burnikel and family, Mr. and Mrs. Will Burnikel and daughters, Mrs. Emma Frank and daughter Emma, all of Siren, Wis.
