Henry Cabot Callahan
March 13, 1867 – October 22, 1955
Henry Callahan 88, died at the Sorenson Rest Home at Cresco, October 22, after an illness of long standing from the infirmities of old age.
Henry Cabot Callahan was born at Cedar Falls, Iowa, March 13, 1867. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Callahan, were among the first settlers in Mount Vernon township, Blackhawk County.
He grew to manhood and remained on his parents farm until 1890, when he entered the field of selling. He was employed by various concerns at Waverly and Cedar Falls. For many years he represented the Iowa and Minnesota Land Company of Cedar Falls.
December 27, 1899, he was united in marriage with Anna McGreevey of Leland. They were the parents of four children; Joseph who died in infancy; Roland, who died at the age of 28; Alyce, now Mrs. Roy Armstrong, and James R. Callahan, of Riceville.
Mr. and Mrs. Callahan made their home in Cedar Falls until November 1904, when he took up farming on his parents farm, north of Cedar Falls. In 1907, they came to Howard County and improved the farm which he had purchsed in 1893. This was the family home until 1897, when they moved to Lime Springs. In May 1940, they moved to Riceville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away in April 1954, and his two sons. He was the last surviving member of a family of eight brothers and sisters.
Besides his children he leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends to mourn his death.
Funeral services were held October 25, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville, with burial in Calvary Cemetery at Elma.
