Elgin Echo, Thursday, 2 July 1903.

Tuesday forenoon, about 11 o'clock, a little two year old boy of M. B. Doolittle's found a box of matches behind a clock on a shelf which he had reached by climbing on a chair and before he was discovered, had bitten the heads from 28 parlor matches and swallowed them. Dr. Ahern was summoned, but as there is no antidote for phosphorus poisoning, he could do little but relieve the stomach. However the little fellow brightened up considerably and late in the afternoon laughed and played some. Wednesday morning he was seized with a spasm and soon died. The little stomach was literally cooked with the phosphorous.

Note: This may be a reference to Herbert A. Doolitte, a son of Moses B. Doolittle. Both are shown on the IGPP as buried in Oaklawn cemetery.

Submitter is not related.
