John R. Burgess, 74, funeral held Saturday

Funeral services for John R. Burgess were held Saturday, Aug. 23 at the United Methodist church in Cresco with the Rev. Maurice Frevert, pastor of the United Methodist church in Lime Springs officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John Richard Burgess was born on March 21, 1906, on a farm in Winneshiek county, the fourth of seven children born to George and Emma Burgess. He received his education in the Cresco schools.

He was united in marriage to Bernetta Kapler on Dec. 24, 1934. They became the parents of two children. John and Bernetta lived on a farm east of Cresco for 32 years until his retirement in 1969. John had been in failing health for some years with emphazema, but died of a massive heart attack on Thursday, Aug 21.

He is survived by his wife, Bernetta; a son, Donald of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sonia) Drtina of Cresco; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Vera Price, Mrs. Ellen Daly, both of Cresco, and Mrs. Catherine Williams of Riceville; two brothers, Clifford of Cresco and James of Canton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles.
