Earl Benson Dies Following Farm Machinery Mishap

Earl Benson was killed Thursday in a farm accident when his clothing was caught in the power take-off of a tractor while he was spraying weeds on his son's farm.

Funeral services were held Saturday 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist church. The Rev. George Baker officiated. Burial was in the Oak Lawn cemetery with the Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Earl Francis Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Benson, was born July 1, 1903, in Fillmore county, near Harmony, Minn. He received his education in the rural schools and graduated from the Parker high school in Winnebago county, Minn. He attended Hamline university for a year. Later he graduated from Coyne Electric school in Chicago, Ill.

He married Ruth Ellen Emslie on June 27, 1929. They moved to a farm which they purchased in Orleans township, Winneshiek county. They made their home here for 32 years. Then a son, John, and his wife took over over the management of this farm. In March 1968 they moved to their present farm about two miles west of their former home.

Mr. Benson was a member of the United Methodist church where he served on the church board for a number of years, also as lay delegate to the annual conference, a teacher in the Sunday school and in many other ways. He served one year as an instructor for the G.I. Agriculture Course. He was one of the first directors of the Winneshiek County Extension Service. He was a member of the F.H.A. board, a director of the Federal Land Bank and director of the Howard County Mutual Insurance association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cyril.

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, John, of Cresco and daughter, Carol of Rochester, Minn.; two grandchildren, and one brother, Merrill of Harmony, Minn.
