E.L. Bradley, Cresco Funeral Director, Dies Wednesday
The Cresco Congregational church was filled for the funeral services Saturday afternoon of Ewing L. Bradley, 83, well-known retired funeral director, who died at the Evans Memorial home in Cresco Wednesday.
Conducting the funeral services was the pastor, the Rev. Ross McGuire. Burial was in Oak Lawn cemetery.
Mr. Bradley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Bradley, was born in Taylor county June 23, 1880.
He taught school in southern Iowa for several years and was graduated from the Mortuary Science school at Des Moines in 1912. He entered the funeral business in Lenox and in 1914 came to Cresco and opened the Bradley Funeral home. He was joined in the business in 1930 by his son, Norman.
In addition to his Cresco business, Mr. Bradley entered the mortuary business in Riceville in the early 1930's. Norman, took over the Cresco business after his father's retirement in 1945. Mr. Bradley continued to operate the Riceville funeral home until 1961.
A 50-year certificate for continuous service in the funeral business was presented Mr. Bradley in 1962 by the Iowa Funeral Directors association.
Mr. Bradley was married to the former Elizabeth Wheeler in 1902. He was assisted throughout his years in business by his wife.
Mr. Bradley managed a semi-professional baseball team in Cresco in 1921 and 1922.
He served as secretary of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce for several years. He was elected coroner of Howard county and served in this capacity for a number of terms. He promoted and organized the first local junior golf tournament at the Cresco Country club, where he was club champion for three years.
Surviving Mr. Bradley, besides his wife and son, Norman, are two daughter, Mrs. Cecyle Bradley, of Chicago, and Mrs. Ray (Luella) Falardeau of Saint Paul.
There are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides a brother, C.E. Bradley of Clarinda, and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Posten of Des Moines, and Mrs. Cecil (Adda) Morgan of Gravity.
Preceding Mr. Bradley in death was a son, Lester, who died in 1929.
