Fred Bergman, Retired Farmer, Dies at Age 79

Funeral services for Fred Bergman, 79, of Cresco, who died in his home Sunday evening, are being held this (Wednesday) afternoon from the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church.

Conducting the services will be the pastor, the Rev. E.C. Franke, and burial will be in the Oak Lawn cemetery. The Bradley Funeral home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Bergman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Bergman, was born in Nienburg, Germany, October 31, 1886. He was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran faith and on March 31, 1901 he was confirmed.

Mr. Bergman married Marie Roehrs in Germany, and the couple emigrated to America in 1910, settling near Postville. Mr. and Mrs. Bergman farmed in the Postville community until 1926 when they moved to a farm near Waukon. In 1929 they came to the Cresco community and farmed until 1953 when Mr. Bergman was forced to retire because of illness.

For the last 10 years Mr. Bergman was a member of the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church.

Mr. Bergman had several major operations since his retirement. His health failed rapidly this last year. He had been bedfast for about five months.

Surviving Mr. Bergman are his wife; two daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Emmie) Schave and Mrs. Adele Michel both of Cresco; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There are one half-brother, Henry of Canada, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Lena Everman and Mrs. Anna Gordon, both of Postville.

Preceding Mr. Bergman in death were his parents and one half-brother, William.
