Mrs. Ray Burgess, Life-long Resident, Dies at Age 90
Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Burgess, 90, of Cresco, widow of Ray Burgess, pioneer lumber dealer, were held at the Cresco Congregational church Monday afternoon. Mrs. Burgess died in the Evans Memorial home Friday.
Conducting the funeral services was the Rev. Robert Cleveland, pastor, and burial was in Oak Lawn cemetery. The Bradley Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Burgess, the former Gertrude Eugenia Gillette, was born August 15, 1875, in Cresco, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund C. Gillette. This pioneer family settled here in the early 1850's where their first child, Gertrude's oldest sister, was born 109 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Burgess were married June 3, 1897, a union which continued for 64 years until Mr. Burgess's death in 1961.
Mrs. Burgess was a life-long member of the Congregational church, a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 62 years, and a member of Friends in Council.
Surviving Mrs. Burgess are one daughter, Mrs. S.A. Rockwell of Hibbing, Minnesota; one son, J.E. Burgess of Cresco; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Burgess in death, in addition to her husband, were a daughter, Emily, two sisters and three brothers.
