DR. FRANCIS LEROY (BUD) KLINGLE, JR., 81, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2014 after a valiant fight against Alzheimer’s Disease in Cresco, Iowa. Bud was born on June 4, 1932, in Cresco, Iowa, son of Francis Leroy Klingle, Sr. and Clara Clemmer Klingle. He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Iowa graduating from the medical school in 1957. Bud served his country for 6 years serving as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Navy. He was a flight surgeon for the Navy’s only S.A.C. Squadron based out of San Diego, California. Bud loved being a doctor. He practiced family medicine for over 40 years after leaving the Navy first in his beloved Cresco and then in the Tampa area. Bud was a warm and caring doctor and his patients always knew he was there for them. He also loved snow skiing and playing golf, fulfilling a lifelong dream playing the “old” courses in Scotland and Ireland. Most of all, he loved his Janis, born Janis Elaine Peterson. Janis was his teenage sweetheart and they were married in 1951 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in July of 2012 before Janis passed away in August of 2012. Bud loved her whether she was cheering for him on the football field or basketball court at CHS. Bud had great memories of his high school buddies from both football and basketball but especially of that team that just missed making it to substate. He loved his golfing buddies and the great matches with his foursome on Thursdays. He loved being a gentleman farmer and his medical practice, partners and nurses. Bud was devoted to his family. He is survived by his four sons, John of French Lick, IN, Robert (Bob) of Louisville, KY, James (Jim) of Punta Gorda, FL and Chowalit Tanomtin of Bangkok, Thailand; four daughters-in-law; Nancy, Jean, Joyce, and Jarinya; four grandchildren, Andrea Gawlista of Portland, OR; D’Arcy Klingle of Washington, DC, John Francis Klingle of Chicago, IL, and Kathryn Rayne Klingle of Louisville, KY and grandson-in-law Josh Gawlista. His brother Robert (Pete) Klingle and many nieces and nephews also survive him. A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at First Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA on Friday, January 10th. Visitation will be from 10am until 12 noon. The service will begin at 12 noon also at First Lutheran followed by burial at Oak lawn Cemetery. Lunch will be served at First Lutheran. The family wishes to thank the Patty Elwood Center for their loving care as well as the good friends that visited Bud while he lived at the center.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy honor Bud’s lifelong love of Cresco, the town founded by his ancestors, and his lifelong love of the game of golf. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Bud Klingle Memorial Fund through CUSB, PO Box 57, Cresco, IA 52136. John, Bob and Jim Klingle will donate to this fund and proceeds will be utilized to enhance the beauty and playability of the Cresco Country Club. Bud enjoyed the Cresco Country Club growing up and was a member from 1962-1980 and enjoyed many rounds with his ongoing foursome made up of Jack Thompson, Dean Nierling and Dale Turnmire.
