Joseph H. Burgess, Senior Member of Lumber Firm, Dies in Home Sunday

Funeral Services Today In Cresco Congregational Church. Active Until Day Of His Death

Funeral services are being conducted this afternoon (Wednesday) for Joseph. H. Burgess, 75, highly respected Cresco business man for nearly 50 years.

The Rev. Ross McGuire, pastor of the First Congregational church, is conducting the service in the church for which Mr. Burgess had been organist for 25 years. Burial will be in Oak Lawn cemetery with the Bradley Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burgess, president of the Burgess and Sons, lumber firm, Cresco's oldest family business, died Sunday morning form a heart attack. He had enjoyed good health through the years and was at his desk as usual Saturday at the lumber yard.

A son of H.C. Burgess, founder of the lumber yard, and Mrs. Burgess, Joseph H. Burgess was born September 16, 1884, one year after the lumber firm was organized.

He attended the Cresco public schools, and following graduation from the University of Minnesota, he joined the Burgess lumber firm in 1911.

In addition to his business interests, Mr. Burgess took an active part in community activities. He served as president of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce, and was a charter member of the Kiwanis club. He was a past worshipful master of the Masonic lodge and was an active participant in the minstrel shows so popular years back.

On April 22, 1916, he was married to Laura Cameron. The couple was the parents of two children, Jane and John. Mrs. Burgess died June 11, 1951.

Surviving Mr. Burgess are his daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Jane) Ferguson of Scottsdale, Arizona, and John J. of Cresco, and five grandchildren. In addition there is a brother, Ray Burgess, 85. He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother, Charles C. Burgess.
