Mrs. Ada Barker, 102, Dies

The ashes of Mrs. Ada G. Barker, 102, of Daytona Beach, Florida, former Cresco resident, who died in her home November 5, are to be brought to Cresco for burial in the family lot in Oak Lawn cemetery.

Services for Mrs. Barker were held at a Daytona Beach funeral home November 7, with the Rev. J. Hilton Olive of the Silver Beach Baptist church in charge.

Mrs. Barker, the former Ada Galloway, was born in Chippewas Falls, Wisconsin, January 25, 1858. She attended and taught schools in Iowa, and homesteaded in South Dakota while teaching there.

In 1886, she and Amos E. Barker were married in Webster, South Dakota, and several years later the couple moved to Cresco, where Mr. Barker practiced law and at one time served as mayor.

When Mr. and Mrs. Barker were visiting their children in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1925, Mr. Barker suffered a fatal heart attack. Mrs. Barker had since spent her time between Cresco and Daytona Beach with the exception of two winters spent in California.

Eight years ago Mrs. Barker fractured her hip and had since been confined to a nursing home. During the last several years her condition had improved sufficiently to permit her to visit in the homes of her children during the holidays and on other family occasions.

Mrs. Barker was widely known in the Daytona Beach area not only for her advanced age but for her interest in politics and local, national and world events. On her centennial birthday anniversary she received congratulations by telegram from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. She was also honored by floral gifts from the mayor and city of Cresco.

The elderly woman had the distinction of being Volusia county's oldest registered voter. She received her absentee ballot this year, but had been too ill to return it before her death.

Until about a year ago when her eyesight failed she read the daily papers and magazines and kept her interest in public affairs. She was a member of the Cresco Twentieth Century club, and formerly belonged to several clubs in Daytona Beach.

Surviving Mrs. Barker are her three children, including Mrs. Charles A. Lee and Mrs. W.G. Fleming of Daytona Beach, and McKinley Barker of Holly Hill, Florida. There are three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
