Mrs. Mary E. Andrus passed away at her home in Cresco Friday morning, June 9, 1933, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, the Rev. W.H. Mitchell, pastor of the M.E. church officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery where the members of the Woman's Relief Corps of which Mrs. Andrus was a member conducted their ritualistic service at the graveside.
Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Anderson and daughter Delores and Mrs. Ed Conry of Delevan, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Andrus of Austin, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Stearns, Mrs. D.P. Hensley, Mrs. S.C. Grimes and daughter Mrs. Inez Barnhouse and her two children, all of West Union.
Mary E. Andrus, daughter of Peleg and Sophia Cheever, was born in Ohio March 3, 1842. She lived to the advanced age of 91 years, 3 months and 6 days and was one of the oldest residents in Howard county.
While still a young girl she moved with her parents to Epworth, Iowa. She was one of a family of ten children. At the age of ten she was left motherless, and, being the oldest girl at home, she mothered the younger children.
On January 1, 1863, she was united in marriage to Daniel P. Andrus, at West Union, Iowa, and lived the early part of her married life at Lima, Ia. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive. Her husband preceded her in death, Feb. 19, 1915. One son, James, departed this life, Aug. 9,1925, and a daughter, Mary, passed away, Nov. 6, 1930.
In 1901 the family moved to Cresco where Mrs. Andrus continued to reside until the time of her death.
Left to mourn her departure are one sister, Mrs. Almira Heth of Clarence, Iowa; two sons, Clarence D. Andrus and Charles H. Andrus; one daughter, Mrs. Ida F. Cornish; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four nieces; five nephews, besides other relatives and friends.
Mrs. was a Christian woman, a faithful wife and mother, a dependable, valuable friend and always willing to help those in need. She had been a member of the Women's Relief Corps for a period of 32 years, and as long as health permitted was a regular attendant upon the meetings of the Order.
