Kenneth "Ken" W. Howe, 91, of Waukon, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial with military rites was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends called from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there was a 2:45 p.m. scripture service. Honorary casketbearers were Dr. Andrea Venteicher, Angie Cooper, the Wayne and Jan Howe family, and the staffs of: Veterans Memorial Hospital Home Healthcare, Prairie du Chien Hospice and the Good Samaritan Center. Casketbearers were Eric Whalen, Bradley Glassmaker, Peter Whalen, Nathan Glassmaker, Nicholas Howe, Andrew Howe and Jacob Clauson. Online condolences may be left at martinfunerals.com.

Kenneth Wayne Howe was born June 11, 1922, in Chester, the son of Wilbur Thomson and Mabel Mae (Cheney) Howe. He graduated from Decorah High School in Decorah. In 1943, Ken entered the United States Army and served in India, Burma and China during WWII. He earned several decorations including: Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, four Bronze Battle Stars, three Overseas Service Bars, a Good Conduct Medal and four Bronze Stars for heroism. After being discharged, Ken moved to Waukon, where he married Margie Anderson Nov. 24, 1949, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The couple moved to Chicago, Ill., for a few years before making their home in Waukon. Ken worked as a feed truck driver for Anderson Produce and Equity feed co-op. Later, he and Margie ran the Green Valley Golf Course in Waukon. Ken was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, where he also was the custodian for many years. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the VFW. In May of 2012, Ken took part in an honor flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Being an overall handyman, Ken was always making repairs around his house and his children's houses. He liked woodworking and carpentry, and built his garage and front porch, along with furniture. He and Margie loved to travel, including trips to Canada and Arkansas. An avid sport enthusiast, Ken followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, Waukon Indians and watched his grandkids' sporting events.

Ken is survived by his six children: Jim (Mary Alice) Howe of Woodstock, Ill., Gary (Debbie) Howe of Bethany, Okla., Karen (Pat) Whalen of Lansing, Mari (David) Glassmaker of Solon Springs, Wis., and Donald (Barbara) Howe and Richard (Denise) Howe, both of Waukon; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law: Theresa Anderson of Crystal River, Fla., and Wanda Anderson of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Margie, who died in 2011; a child in infancy; grandson Daniel Kenneth Howe; a brother Charles "Tubby" and wife Lorna Howe; two sisters: Evelyn and husband Paul Bayer, and Marjorie and husband Bernard Baltes.
