Businessman, developer Donald Aspenson dies

Funeral services for long-time Cresco businessman and developer Donald L. Aspenson, 64, were held Saturday, March 8, at First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

He died at his home in Cresco on Tuesday, March 4, after a lengthy illness.

Donald Aspenson, born March 24, 1921, in Forest City to Oscar and Clara Aspenson, moved to Decorah when a youngster and came to Cresco in 1945 after serving three years in the U.S. Navy. He became associated with Hovden Implement and became its owner when Helmer Hovden was killed in a vehicle accident in 1949.

He sold the implement dealership to Carol Neely in 1952 and joined with Lyle Erickson in 1956 in the real estate business. The two, who also operated an office in New Hampton in addition to their Cresco headquarters, dissolved their business partnership in 1963 when each set up their own real estate business.

Donald Aspenson remained a real estate broker, primarily alone until he was joined by his son, Gary, several years ago. He was involved in home building and real estate development. His firm was involved in much of the residential expansion of Cresco in the late sixties and early seventies.

Officiating at the funeral services were the Rev. Gary Lee and Intern Randy Brandt with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Nephews Tom Aspenson, David Aspenson, Eric Aspenson, Jeff Lee, John Lee, Jens Lee, Jacob Lee, Stephen Norland, David Hagen and Rick Hagen were casket bearers. Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Don and Gloria Ann Lee were married on July 3, 1948. He is survived by his wife, Gloria: eight children: Don, Jr. of Altus, OK, Jim of Wichita, KS, Mark of Cresco and Janet Blessum of Winterset; four grandchildren; also two sisters, Corolla Lennon of Decorah and Harriet Norland of Cresco and a brother, Oscar Aspenson of Mason City.
