Darrel Jerry Schimmels was born December 12, 1944 in San Diego, California, the son of Fred B. and Hilma (Petersen) Schimmels of Cedar Falls, IA. He attended Carlisle schools and graduated from Dike High School in 1963. In 1966 he enlisted in the National Guard and was stationed in Fort Ord, CA. He was honorably discharged in 1972. On Dec. 26, 1969 he married Nancy Heuer at the Fredsville Lutheran Church in rural Dike. They lived in rural Hudson for 13 years on Nancy’s father’s farm where their daughter, Ann and two sons Jerry and Fred grew up. Later they moved to Lawler, then to Cresco where they have lived for 22 years. Since high school, Darrel has worked for other farmers, and milked for himself, and for the last 16 years he drove a semi. He always said when he retired he was going to have a cow for milk, chickens so they would have eggs and so on. Darrel enjoyed the outdoors by spending time with his children and grandchildren. Watching his two sons race was his biggest enjoyment. While on the road he would call them to see how they did in their races.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Cresco; a daughter Ann Schimmels and Dave Howell of Waterloo; a son Fred (Dotty) Schimmels of Van Meter, IA; 7 grandchildren: Brian, Zach, Seth, Hannah, Zach, Stormy, and Cassidy; his mother Hilma Schimmels of Cedar Falls; a brother Cliff (Joyce) Schimmels of Denver, IA; a sister Sandy (Doug) Patrie of Clarksville, IA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Fred B., his son Jerry and a sister Marie Weber.
