Joan M. Wicks, 73, of Cresco, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joan will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, Iowa 52136. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, at the Heritage Events Center, 229 3rd Ave. West, Cresco, Iowa, with a scripture service to follow.
Joan was born on June 29, 1940, daughter of William and Clara (Urban) Stejskal in Howard Center Township. On September 12, 1964, she married Leonard “Whimpy” Wicks at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, MN. She and Leonard settled on acreage in Kendallville and during their 38 years of marriage created a happy home for their six children and her sister Mary. Joan had numerous occupations throughout her life. She was a hired girl/fry cook, a production worker at Collins Radio, and an administrative assistant for both Opportunity Homes and The Laura Ingalls-Wilder Museum. She was strongly involved with the TOPS group and taught CCD for many years.
Joan had immense faith in God, and enduring love of family, and a drive to socialize and make new friends. She also had a huge affinity for all things frog (especially the stuffed variety), which paired nicely with her incredible sense of silliness, which created smiles all around her.
Surviving Joan are her children, John (Gay) Wicks of Schaller, IA, Ruth (Mark Carolan) of Ridgeway, IA, Kaye (Paul) Steege of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tony Wicks of Cresco, IA, Anne of Justin, TX, and Dean (Judith) Wicks of Pella, IA, grandchildren, Luke and Tim Kuhse, Jared Stearns, Casey Phillips, Mercedes Kridlebaugh, great grandchildren, Cali, Blaine, Mason, Bailee, Kohen, and Diamond, her siblings, Clare Stejskal, Tom Stejskal, John (Leslee) Stejskal, and Mary Stejskal, and her aunt, Leona Urban.
Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, son Paul, son-in-law Skip Stearns, and brother Loras.
