BETHESDA,MD- Robert James Wenthold,61, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 of renal cell carcinoma.
Robert James Wenthold was born June 20, 1948 the son of Alois and Gladys (Gesing) Wenthold in Cresco and grew up on a farm. He attended Notre Dame High School in Cresco. He received his B.S. degree from Loras College in Dubuque and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Robert was the Scientific Director of NIDCD's intramural program from 1998 through 2008. He was recognized internationally for his work on glutamate receptors, was once called "a natural treasure" at one of his laboratory's reviews.
His spare time was spent with family, gardening, enjoying birds, being outdoors, reading, tinkering around the house, watching sports, running three to five miles several times a week.
Survivors include his wife, Kris; children: Robert J. Wenthold, Jr. of Arlington, Va., Elisabeth (David) Lucas and granddaughter, Marissa of North Haledon, N.J.; sisters: Phyllis (Don) Arendt of Decorah, Mary Ann (Jim) Mahaffey of Madison, Wis., nieces and nephews: Susan Wohlsdorf Arendt of Ames, Bruce Arendt of Decorah, Caitlin Mammen of Greeley, Colo., Benjamin Mahaffey, Daniel Mahaffey and Devin Mahaffey of Madison, Wis.
