Funeral services for Waldon "Wally" F. Platz of Lime Springs were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Waldon, 91, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where he had resided for about two years.

Waldon Foster Platz was born Aug. 23, 1918 the son of Clifford and Esther Platz, at one of his father's first farms near Schley.

Waldon graduated eighth grade and was kept from school many days due to his father needing help on the farm. Waldon often said the he most enjoyed the time of year when he would be plowing the soil.

On Dec. 26, 1941 he married Viola Schaefer at First Baptist Church in Cresco,where they had originally met.

Waldon served in many different capacities at the First Baptist Church. Although raised in the church, his spiritual interests were peaked following an accident involving his oldest daughter Doris at the age of eight. His spiritual leadership continues to influence all of his family members.

Farming was his life.. He first began farming with his father Clifford. Later he farmed in partnership with his brother-in-law Leo Boyer, and finally worked his own acreage south of Lime Springs until retiring.

Waldon loved people. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; children: David (Linda) Platz, Doris (Art) Brookins, Ruth (Gordie) Ernst, Janice (Bob) Nickelson, Duane (Donna) Platz and Gary (Linda) Platz; grandchildren: Dawn (Paul) Evans, Brenda Platz, Laurie (Terry) Cross, Randy (Noreen) Brookins, Sherrie Foss, Jamie Brookins, Corey (Maria) Brookins, Bob Jr. (Julie) Nickelson, Angela (Josh) Coddington, and Brian and Stacy Platz; Great-grandchildren from Doris Brookins' family: Abby, Bethany,Nathaniel,Jillian,Jared,Jordie,Kaylie,Colton,Cassie,Hannah,Jacob,Silas,Levi,Keenan; from Janice Nickelson family: Fiona,Harlie and Danika.

Waldon was preceded in death by a grandson: Jeffrey Brookins; his parents: Clifford and Esther; and his sister: Geraldine Boyer.
