Civil War Veteran Called By Death
Wm. Bandle Aged Eighty-five Dies In Cresco Sunday Night
Wm. Bandle, who for the past 18 years has had his home with his daughter, Mrs. J. Pless died Sunday night after an illness of only about one week's duration.
Deceased was born at Kirchheim, on the Teck, Wurtemburg, Germany, Oct. 13, 1837. He grew up in his native town and served an apprenticeship as tanner. When 18 years of age he came to the United States and followed his trade in Buffalo and Milwaukee.
When the Civil War broke out he enlisted and served in So. E. 20th Wis. Inf. volunteers till the close of the war. In an engagement at Prairie Grove he was wounded and after his recovery he served under General Grant at the Siege of Vicksburg. He was discharged from the service at Galveston, Tex., July 14,1865.
Coming north he settled in Howard county and was married to Marie Fallgatter. To this union was born nine children-seven sons and two daughters. Five sons died in infancy. In 1892 his wife died, but he continued farming till the spring of 1900, when he retired and a few years later came to make his home with his daughter Mrs. J. Pless. He died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, having suffered a stroke of apoplexy a few days before. He is survived by four children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel's Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Haberacker of Alta Vista, pastor of the church which Mr. Bandle helped to establish. Burial was at Alta Vista.
