Former Physician Of Cresco Died In Rochester, New York
Funeral Service for Dr. George A. Plummer Held in Cedar Rapids Monday Afternoon
The funeral of Dr. George A. Plummer, formerly of Cresco who died in Rochester, New York, Friday, was held in a funeral chapel in Cedar Rapids Monday afternoon.
The Rev. A.D. Phelps of Muscatine, former pastor of the Congregational church of Cresco, was in charge of the service.
Dr. Plummer practice medicine in Cresco for nearly 40 years until seven years ago, when his health failed. About four years ago he moved to Rochester, New York, where he since lived.
He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George M. Plummer of Chester. He was born at Chester and graduated from the Chester high school. He received his doctor of medicine degree at Keokuk Medical college, at Keokuk, in 1902.
He took graduate work at John Hopkins university in 1914 and graduate work in Vienna in 1931.While doing research work there, he was president of the American Medical association.
He was married to Floy Courtney at Chester, June 29, 1904. Four children were born to them, two dying in infancy. A daughter Mazie, who is Mrs. F.T. Kahler of Saint Louis, Missouri and a son Dr. George W. Plummer of Cresco, and their mother survive. There are two grandchildren
Dr. Plummer was at one time president of the Cresco school board. He was a past health officer and staff member of Saint Joseph's Mercy hospital. During World War I, in 1917 and 1918, he was a captain in the medical corps. He was stationed t Fort Riley and Rockefeller Institute and 1919 he was at the base hospital at Camp Chillicothe, Ohio, as commanding major of the medical corps.
He was a member of the American Legion post of Cresco, a past president of the Howard County Medical society, member of the State Medical society, Fellow of the American Medical society and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He was also a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges of Cresco and of the Congregational church.
Burial was in Cedar Memorial Park at Cedar Rapids with full military honors being preformed by members of the Cedar Rapids American Legion post.
Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. George A. Plummer, who accompanied the body from Rochester, New York; Mr. and Mrs. F.T. Kahler and family, Saint Louis, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. George W. Plummer, Cresco; Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hicks, Saint Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. Anna Plummer, Lime Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Payne; Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Fields; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Farnsworth and daughter, Marynell; Vira and Beatha Kuntz, Cresco; Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Brown and Mrs. D.J. Robbins, Ames
