Funeral services for Jerome Elsbernd of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 15 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were Jerome's grandsons: Jay Elsbernd, Brian Brincks, Jeffrey Brincks, William Garbers, Glen Elsbernd, and Scott Elsbernd. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Jerome, 78, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a long illness.

Jerome Joseph Elsbernd was born July 20, 1925 near Calmar, the son John and Martha (Kuennen) Elsbernd. Jerome attended grade school in Festina and then graduated from high school in Epworth.

On June 13, 1949 he married Luella Schmitt at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson by Father Stephen Kucera. They farmed north of Spillville from 1949-1985 then moved to Spillville.

Jerome received the Pioneer Dairyman Award in 1993. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, served on the Parish Council, and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2744 in Protivin.

He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife Luella of Spillville; three sons: Steven of Ridgeway, Alan of Calmar, and Darrel of Lime Springs; four daughters: Joan McIntire of Farmington, MN, Kay Garbers of LaCrosse, WI, Nancy Brincks of Calmar, and Debra Beckman of Winona, MN; 16 grandchildren; one brother: Roger of Decorah; and two sisters: Sister Ruth Elsbernd of Eldridge and Colette Kuhn of Cresco.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Joseph as a child and Arnold.
